Letters Big and Small

The Spark

Concept

Every letter has two forms: uppercase (capital) and lowercase. Recognising both forms is essential because books and texts use both. Children also need to know the name AND sound of each letter.

Activity

Write your child's name in uppercase letters and then again in lowercase. Point out: Did you know your name can be written two ways? Both say the same thing! Compare the two and discuss what looks the same and different.

Check

Hold up a letter card and ask: What letter is this? What sound does it make? Do this with both uppercase and lowercase forms.

Tip: Every Letter Has Two Outfits!

Some letters look very similar and are easy to mix up! Watch out for: b and d, p and q, m and w, u and n. Try writing each pair carefully and say the letter name as you write.
