Clapping Syllables

The Spark

Concept

A syllable is a beat or chunk of sound in a word. Every syllable has one vowel sound. 'Cat' has 1 syllable, 'rabbit' has 2, 'crocodile' has 3. Hearing syllables helps children spell longer words by breaking them into manageable chunks.

Activity

Say your child's name and clap each syllable. Then do the same with family members' names. This instantly shows syllables are real and everywhere.

Check

Say a word and ask: How many beats? Clap it out. Can your child clap and count syllables in 2- and 3-syllable words without your help?
