High Frequency Sight Words
The Spark
Concept
Sight words are high-frequency words that appear constantly in reading and writing. Some can be decoded phonically (can, it, in), while others have irregular patterns (the, said, was). Automating these words frees up mental energy for comprehension.
Activity
Flash a familiar sight word (e.g. 'the') and ask: 'How fast can you read this? Let's see!' Praise instant recognition. Then ask: 'Can you use it in a sentence?' Connect words to real reading contexts.
Check
Flash 10 sight words one at a time. Can your child read each one within 2 seconds? Record which ones need more practice.
