Long Vowel Patterns

The Spark

Concept

Long vowels say their own name. The 'ai' pattern makes the /ay/ sound (rain), 'ee' makes /ee/ (tree), 'oa' makes /oh/ (boat), and 'ue' makes /yoo/ (blue).

Activity

Ask your child to say the word 'rain' slowly. Can they hear the long /ay/ sound? Now try 'tree', 'boat' and 'blue'. What do they notice about these sounds?

Check

Can your child read and sort the words correctly? Can they think of one more word for each vowel pattern without being prompted?
