Commas in Lists
The Spark
Concept
Commas separate items in a list so the reader does not get confused. In a list of three or more items, we use commas between all items except the last two, which are joined with 'and' (or 'or'). For example: 'I need a pencil, a ruler, an eraser and some paper.' In Australian English the Oxford comma is optional but consistency is key.
Activity
Ask your child what they would pack for a camping trip. When they list items, count how many times they say 'and'. Then show them how commas can replace most of those 'ands' to make the sentence flow better.
Check
Can your child write a list of 4+ items using commas correctly, with 'and' only before the last item? Can they identify missing or misplaced commas in example sentences?
Add the Commas
Rewrite each sentence, adding commas in the correct places to separate the list items.
She packed a hat a towel sunscreen and a book. Corrected:
He bought apples bananas oranges and grapes. Corrected:
The classroom had desks chairs a whiteboard a bookshelf and a globe. Corrected:
For dinner we had soup bread salad and pasta. Corrected:

Sort: Correct or Incorrect Comma Use?

A list of 3 items: use ___ comma. Example: ___
A list of 4 items: use ___ commas. Example: ___

Where Does the Comma Go?
Circle the correct position for the comma in each sentence.
I need a pen [A], a ruler [B] and a notebook.
She packed clothes [A], shoes [B], toiletries [C] and a book.
We bought milk [A] and bread [B].

Match: Number of Items to Number of Commas

I need flour eggs, milk and butter. Error: ___ Corrected: ___
Does This List Need Commas?
Circle YES if the list needs commas, or NO if it does not.
I have two cats and one dog.
She plays guitar piano violin and flute.
He ran and jumped.
The box contained ribbons buttons thread and scissors.
Tip: Commas Replace 'and' in Lists
The comma's job in a list is to replace the word 'and' between every item EXCEPT the last one. Try this test: wherever you would say 'and' between list items (except the final pair), replace it with a comma. That is the rule!
- 1Say your list aloud, saying 'and' between every item
- 2Now replace every 'and' except the last one with a comma
- 3Write the sentence with commas and read it aloud — does it flow?
- 4Find one list in a book or magazine and check that the rule is followed

My explanation of the rule:
Example 1: ___
Example 2: ___
Tip: The Comma Is a Breathing Space
Commas in a list are like small breathing spaces for the reader. When you read a list sentence aloud, you naturally pause at each comma. That pause tells you where the comma should be. Always READ your list sentences aloud before writing them — your mouth is a great comma detector!
- 1Read 3 list sentences aloud from a book — pause at each comma
- 2Write a list sentence and test it by reading aloud — does each comma feel natural?
- 3Find a list sentence without commas and add them based on where you naturally pause
- 4Ask a family member to read your list sentence — did they pause where your commas were?
Sort: How Many Commas Needed?
Sort each sentence by how many commas it needs.

- 5Read the menu aloud to your family at dinnertime
Oxford Comma: What Is It?
The Oxford comma (also called the serial comma) is an OPTIONAL comma placed before 'and' in a list: 'I bought milk, eggs, and bread.' In Australian English it is optional, but consistency is important. Read about it and answer the questions.
Rewrite with an Oxford comma: 'I like cats dogs and birds.'
Rewrite without an Oxford comma: 'I like cats, dogs, and birds.'
Which do you prefer and why?
Sort: Oxford Comma or No Oxford Comma?
Sort each sentence by whether it uses the Oxford comma (comma before the last 'and') or not.
Comma Confusion: When the Comma Changes Everything
Sometimes a missing comma in a list creates a very different meaning. Read each sentence and circle which version is clearer.

'We discussed history, biology and chemistry and maths' vs 'We discussed history, biology, chemistry and maths'
Commas in Sentences vs Commas in Lists
Commas also appear in sentences for reasons OTHER than lists (e.g. after introductory phrases: 'After school, I played tennis.'). Read these sentences and decide: is each comma used for a LIST or for ANOTHER reason?

Tip: Read Lists Aloud — Always
The single best test for comma placement in a list is to read it aloud. Your voice will naturally pause where a comma is needed. If you don't pause between items, you need a comma. If you do pause where a comma already is, it is probably correct. Make reading aloud a habit every time you use a list!
- 1Write a list sentence then read it aloud — do you pause at each comma?
- 2Ask a family member to read your list sentence — do they pause at your commas?
- 3Find a list sentence in a book and read it aloud — do the commas feel natural?
- 4Write one list sentence without commas and read it — where do you naturally pause?
