Suffixes: -ness, -ful, -less

The Spark

Concept

A suffix is added to the end of a word to change its meaning or word type. '-ness' turns an adjective into a noun (kind → kindness). '-ful' means 'full of' (joy → joyful). '-less' means 'without' (hope → hopeless). Learning suffixes rapidly expands vocabulary.

Activity

Ask: 'What is kindness?' Then ask: 'What word is hiding inside kindness?' (kind). Then say: 'So kindness means the quality of being kind.' Now try 'careless' — what is the base word? What does -less mean?

Check

Can your child add the correct suffix to a base word and explain what the new word means? Can they notice when a spelling change is needed (e.g. happy → happiness)?

1

Sort the Suffix Words

Read each word and sort it by its suffix into the correct column.

kindness
joyful
helpless
darkness
thankful
careless
happiness
wonderful
powerless
sadness
hopeful
useless

-less
TipHave your child say each word aloud and listen to the ending before sorting.
2

Match Word to Definition

Draw a line from each word to its correct definition.

darkness
wonderful
careless
joyful
helpless
full of joy and happiness

TipIf your child is unsure, ask them to identify the base word first, then think about what the suffix adds.
