Number Names & Numerals 0–20

The Spark

Concept

We are moving from counting to 5, all the way to 20. The 'Teen' numbers are the hardest because they don't follow a simple pattern.

Activity

The Ten-Frame Flash! Draw a grid of 10 boxes. Fill it with spoons/counters. Then place 3 outside. Say 'Ten and three... Thirteen!' Do this for 11-19.

Check

Can they count to 20 without skipping '15'? Do they know that '14' is a 1 and a 4?

Try This at Home!

Practise number names with these fun activities.

  • 1Go on a number hunt around your house — find numbers on clocks, ovens, remote controls, and letterboxes. Read each number out loud.
  • 2Play 'What comes next?' — a parent says a number and the child says the next one in the sequence.
  • 3Write numbers 0–20 on cards and play snap, matching the numeral to the number word.
  • 4Count objects around the house (shoes by the door, spoons in the drawer) and write the numeral on a whiteboard.
  • 5Play 'Count backwards' — start from 20 and count down to 0 together. Try it while going down the stairs!
  • 6Write the numbers 0–20 in chalk on the driveway and hop along them while saying each number.
